School Programs

OUR APOLOGIES, but the education program at Surratt House Museum is currently going through re-organization. We will continue to provide guided tours of the historic site to all school groups by appointment.  However, until further notice, we are suspending our in-school visits as well as the additonal student activities that we offer during visits to the museum.  Minor set-backs, but we hope to see many students visiting the museum, where they can actually walk in the footsteps of history.

Education Outreach
Teaching the Past to Preserve the Future

The Surratt House Museum offers a variety of museum-based and outreach programs for schools, camps, day care facilities, and Boy Scout and Girl Scout groups. Educational programs are developed for children ranging between 5-18 years of age. Depending on the program selected, the museum emphasizes two main topics:
   • The involvement of Mary Surratt and her family in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.
   • Daily life in Prince George’s County, Maryland during the mid-19th century.

All educational programs are presented by museum educators attired in period clothing. The programs support the observation, analytical and decision-making skills listed within the Maryland Voluntary State Curriculum.
